The 9th UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) Refugee Film Festival will take place from the 4th to the 19th of October at various venues in Tokyo.
With the advance of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the various conflicts in Africa, and the troubles in the Ukraine all contributing to the problem, more than 51 million people around the world were displaced from their homes through violence by the end of 2013. According to Michael Lindenbauer, a representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, this is “the highest number of people [after] World War II to leave their homes and seek protection elsewhere.”
All the films, which are completely free, will be shown at four different locations in Tokyo: Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tokyo, Instituto Cervantes de Tokio, Meiji University Izumi Campus Library / Hall, and at Hibiya Park during Global Festa JAPAN 2014.
This year, 13 films will be screened, including the Japan premiere of the Italian film “Border,” a drama about the conflict in Syria. Click HERE for a PDF of the program.
